The Banta Family’s Joyful Manson Session

I hadn’t connected with the Banta family since 2020. Back then, life looked different for both of us—her kiddos were a lot younger and it wasn’t too long after that I stepped back from photography to homeschool my boys and, for a couple of years, my camera stayed mostly tucked away.

At the start of 2025, I relaunched my business— and if I’m honest, it felt a little like starting from scratch. But slowly, the word got out again. Old clients began to see my posts, the algorithm did its thing, and one day Meghan happened to spot my re-introducing myself post.

The timing was perfect. She and her family were in town for the week, and before we knew it, we had a Signature Session on the calendar. I love the full hour because it gives us time to slow down, let beautiful images unfold naturally, and explore more than one location. For the Bantas, that meant golden light in the Manson field and soft reflections at the Manson boat launch.

Why I Use Prompts Instead of Poses

If you’ve ever worried about “what do I do with my hands?” during photos—don’t. I’ll get you set up in ways that look great on camera, but then I’ll give you something to do.

That’s when the magic happens.

  • Sure, stand here, but walk toward me while telling each other your favorite ice cream flavor.

  • Snuggle up on a blanket, but let’s play a game of telephone and see if the message survives four people (spoiler: it didn’t).

  • Look out at the lake, and tell your parents your favorite part of summer so far.

It’s the in-between laughter, the eye contact, and the connection that make the images special.

The best prompt…

One of my favorite moments came when Jack suggested doing a marimba-style line— hands on shoulders, following the leader. It was spontaneous, adorable, and now firmly in my bag of prompts for future sessions.

Takeaway for Your Own Family Session

The pictures are important, but the connection you share with your loved ones comes first. When you’re having fun together, the joy shows, and you’ll love your photos all the more.
